In 1979, Arthur McDuffie, a Black insurance salesman and Marine Lance Corporal, was beaten to death by four Miami police officers after a traffic stop. When the officers were tried and acquitted, a riot broke out in the Overtown and Liberty City neighborhoods on the night of 17 May 1980. The rioting for three days resulting in at least 18 deaths.
