| Barbara Carr, like many blues and soul musicians, got her start performing in church (with her two sisters.) At 16, she formed the Comets, a band that performed cover tunes. Barbara's break came when her brother-in-law told her bandleader Oliver Sain was looking for a vocalist to replace Fontella Bass. She got the job, which eventually led to her first solo recording contract with Chess.
