Soundalike 45's

Not long after the advent of the 45, entrepreneurs began to enter the music business by recording and releasing "knockoff" cover version records featuring session musicians and vocalists that were not the original performers.

These soundalikes were usually offered for sale at much less than the retail price of major labels, sometimes for less than half, and usually available for purchase at the nearby Five and Dime store.

Jukebox manufacturers also got in on the trend, offering a subscription service of 45s recorded to sound much like contemporary hits and shipped to the jukebox joint in the mail.

These records often offer results that can be weird, terrible or amazing. Sometimes all on the same piece of vinyl.
