Founded in Jamaica in 1959 by Chris Blackwell, Graeme Goodall and Leslie Kong, Island Records was named for Island In The Sun (a novel, film, and Harry Belafonte calypso hit). Three years later, Blackwell relocated the label to the UK in order to market music by Jamaican artists to immigrant communities in London and Birmingham.
In the US, Island-branded records were released by Bell Records (1967–68), A&M Records (1969-1970) and Asylum Records (1970-1971).
