One of the three children of Guyanese-born comedian Benny Nightingale and his wife Iris, Maxine Nightingale sang in her high school band.
She later performed in local clubs, which led to her signing with the Pye Records. Finding little success at Pye, Maxine moved into musical theatre: singing in JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR, HAIR, SAVAGES, and GODSPELL.
In 1975, she returned to soul music, with RIGHT BACK WHERE WE STARTED FROM reaching the Top Ten in the U.K. and number two in the US.
