Playback (later known as Play:Back), a series of 7" discs, was a direct-to-consumer promotional vehicle for the Columbia and Epic (CBS) labels.
For an annual $3 subscription fans would get regular mailings of 7" records, a booklet of information on the artists featured and a prepaid return feedback form. The tracks on Playback discs were generally newly released and not otherwise available as singles at the time.
